Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Costa… Rooney?

Just doesn’t fit, does it?

Don’t get me wrong, as a young player he was unstoppable. To see him at 17 when he debuted to England, or in his early twenties when he was firing them away for Manchester United, he was an incredible player.

But do you know what the distance between Messi, Ronaldo and Rooney is?

Standing the test of time.

Messi and Ronaldo are both in their thirties now, yet still fire them in constantly. Messi still has pinpoint accuracy, Ronaldo still dribbles past opponents at speed, and Rooney…

Well, he…

What does he do now?

He’s lost that high goal tally, and he has lost that speed, and he has lost that dribbling ability.

I watched him playing for Everton in their Europa League qualifier last week against Slovakian side Ruzomberok, and you wouldn’t have noticed he was on the pitch. Against Ruzomberok. Have you even heard of them?

Sorry Everton fans, but I don’t think you’ve got the same player that you sold.

I only hope his England future is as a backup – we have better strikers and midfielders available to us, instead of a player who hasn’t produced for England in a long time.

Maybe I’ll be proven wrong.

Or maybe he’s just not the player he was, and hasn’t been that player for years.

This season will tell…
